President Cyril Ramaphosa’s appointment of Yusuf Cassim as Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training has drawn both praise and criticism. While many supporters have welcomed the decision, citing Cassim’s experience and long-standing involvement in the education sector, the appointment has also triggered a wave of Islamophobia on social media.
In the days following the announcement, Cassim became the target of anti-Muslim rhetoric, with some critics focusing on his religious identity rather than his qualifications or track record. The online backlash has renewed concerns about the rise of hate speech, religious intolerance, and discrimination in South Africa.
Despite the criticism, Cassim has reaffirmed his commitment to serving all South Africans, saying his priority will be to strengthen the country’s higher education and training sector.
Dr Faisal Suliman from the South African Muslim Network (SAMNET) unpacked the growing concerns around Islamophobia and the public reaction to Cassim’s appointment with VOC News.
