Western Cape Premier Alan Winde has written to the Presidency and the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, raising concerns over what appears to be increased fuel stock hoarding by some suppliers.
Winde is calling for urgent national intervention to ensure market stability and prevent disruptions to key sectors of the economy.
He warned that withholding fuel supply poses a serious threat to livelihoods, particularly in the province’s agriculture sector, which accounts for more than 50% of South Africa’s exports.
“Withholding supply places the economy and livelihoods at great risk,” Winde said.
He stressed the urgency of the situation, urging the government to act swiftly to maintain a stable fuel market and avoid disruptions that could have far-reaching consequences for primary industries.
Residents have been encouraged to report fuel shortages directly to authorities via the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources at fuel.complaints@dmpr.gov.za.
The Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PDMC), together with the Fuel Industry Association of South Africa (FIASA) and other stakeholders, is closely monitoring the situation.
Meanwhile, the Competition Commission of South Africa has urged consumers to report suspected cases of price gouging via email at ccsa@compcom.co.za.
Authorities say coordinated efforts are underway to prevent exploitation and ensure a stable and fair fuel supply across the province.
