The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has called on communities to help safeguard schools during the Easter holiday period, with learners set to return to class on 8 April.
As schools close, the department has extended well wishes to learners, teachers, and parents, while emphasising the importance of protecting school infrastructure from vandalism and theft.
Education MEC David Maynier urged residents to play an active role in safeguarding local schools.
“As schools close for the Easter break, we wish our learners, teachers, and parents a peaceful holiday. We appeal to the public to keep a close eye on their local schools during the holiday period. Our schools are valuable community assets, and we all have a role to play in protecting them,” Maynier said.
The department confirmed that it has subsidised holiday security at more than 400 schools across the province. However, it stressed that community vigilance remains the most effective defence against burglary and vandalism.
Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity around school premises to the police immediately.
