This week, Ndifuna Ukwazi invites the public to attend a meeting titled “Councillors’ Imbizo: Reclaiming Democracy from Below.” The event aims to facilitate face-to-face discussions with public officials.
Speaking to VOC News, Ntombi Sambu, political organiser at Ndifuna Ukwazi, explained that the organisation operates within a solidarity space that includes a solidarity movement, community leaders, and individuals who are not affiliated with social movements. All these groups have come together to address shared struggles concerning land and housing.
“When it comes to land and housing, it’s not just about having a roof over your head; it also encompasses basic services. Residents in informal settlements have expressed concerns regarding the lack of transparency and accountability from their ward councillors,” noted Sambu.
She further emphasised that this engagement is essential as the country approaches the local elections next year and that the community has minimal demands.
“We decided to organise this engagement between ward councillors and the community at large so that residents can voice their needs. As we approach the elections, it’s important for people to articulate their minimum demands,” added Sambu.
