Nuclear negotiations between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran are expected to resume this coming Thursday.
According to Iranian state media house IRNA, Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, stated that his negotiating team will construct a draft proposal to present to American negotiators on Thursday.
For Araghchi, a primary aim is to reach an agreement that is mutually beneficial to all parties, while maintaining that uranium enrichment is a right of the Iranian people as signatories to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Uranium enrichment has been described by United States Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, as a “red line.”
In an interview with Fox News, Witkoff stated that he was instructed by President Trump not to agree to any enrichment, adding that the nuclear materials would have to be handed over to the North American state.
Witkoff further expressed surprise that Iran was not “capitulating” to American demands despite the increase in military personnel in the region.
“He’s not — I don’t want to use the word ‘frustrated,’ because he understands he’s got plenty of alternatives. But he’s curious, he’s curious as to why they haven’t — I don’t want to use the word ‘capitulated’ — but why they haven’t capitulated,” said Witkoff.
On X, Araghchi responded to the United States’ curiosity by stating:
“Curious to know why we do not capitulate? Because we are IRANIAN.”
