The United Democratic Movement (UDM) has attributed the South African Post Office’s (SAPO) struggles to mismanagement and poor strategy rather than underfunding.
Auditor-General Tsakani Maluleke has issued damning findings against SAPO, resulting in yet another disclaimer of audit opinion for the sixth consecutive year in the 2024/2025 fiscal period. A disclaimer means the auditor could not obtain enough evidence to provide an opinion, highlighting serious financial management failures.
Nqabayomzi Kwankwa, UDM deputy president, said the Auditor-General’s report reveals an institution crippled by irregular spending, weak governance, and a breakdown in accountability.
“We believe the Post Office can still play a vital role if it diversifies its services, offering insurance, microfinance, and other financial products that serve rural and low-income communities,” Kwankwa added.
