Law enforcement officials from the Metals Theft Unit arrested two male suspects found in possession of 15 kilograms of copper. The suspects were subsequently detained at the Lansdowne South African Police Service (SAPS) station.
According to law enforcement spokesperson Wayne Dyason, compliance inspections were conducted at multiple premises in two separate incidents, where it was found that business owners had failed to register their businesses at various locations.
“The suspects were detained in contravention of the Second Hand Goods Act 6/2009,” said Dyason.
“They were charged as such at Macassar and Kleinvlei SAPS, respectively. The Mobile Team In-Service Training Unit (MTU) will continue in their fight against unregistered businesses, vandalism and theft of essential infrastructure,” he added.
