Two City of Cape Town Law Enforcement Advancement Programme (LEAP) officers have been arrested in Parow following an alleged bribery incident uncovered during a SAPS undercover operation.
Law enforcement spokesperson Wayne Dyason confirmed that the arrests took place on Monday night after a motorist reported the incident to the police.
“It is alleged that the officers pulled over a motorist who was under the influence of alcohol, could not produce a driver’s licence, and was driving an unlicensed vehicle,” Dyason said.
He explained that the officers allegedly demanded a R3,000 bribe and, when the motorist was unable to pay, arranged to collect the money at a later stage.
“The complainant then approached the SAPS Anti-Corruption Unit, which led to the arrest of the two officers during the handover,” Dyason said.
Dyason described the incident as deeply disappointing and stressed that the City would not tolerate such conduct.
“The City will cooperate fully with SAPS in their investigation, and the officers will be served with suspension notices once they are released from custody,” he said.
GOOD City of Cape Town councillor Jonathan Cupido welcomed the arrests but cautioned against viewing the case in isolation.
“We commend the whistle-blower and the Anti-Corruption Unit, but this incident exposes deeper failures in how law enforcement officers are trained, supported and disciplined,” Cupido said.
