Visitors to the Garden Route National Park will have to plan around ongoing construction on the park’s suspension bridge, a major feature of the Tsitsikamma hiking trail.
The 77-metre bridge, a key feature of the 2-kilometre trail over the Storms River gorge, has been closed for safety reasons.
SANParks spokesperson JP Louw said the work is aimed at addressing safety concerns.
“The bridge’s superstructures are being replaced, and the supporting substructures are being rehabilitated. It’s essential that we address deteriorating concrete and ensure the trail remains safe for visitors,” he said.
Construction is being carried out in phases to maintain partial access. Bridges 2 and 3 are currently closed but are expected to reopen on 23 March 2026.
Louw said this will allow hikers to continue using parts of the trail while the main suspension bridge closes.
“The main bridge will be closed from 24 March until 23 June. Visitors should follow all signage and safety instructions during this period,” he added.
During the closure, visitors are advised to follow all signage and safety instructions.
