A report by Gun Free South Africa (GFSA) indicates that the recent crime statistics concerning unlawful firearms and ammunition are a cause for significant concern.
Data from the third quarter of the financial year show that 57% of homicides in the Western Cape involved the use of firearms.
Provincial authorities recorded 926 incidents of unlawful firearm and ammunition possession, an increase from 758 during the comparable timeframe last year.
Crime expert Willem Else told VOC News that the challenges we are having are recurring issues.
“It seems whatever initiatives we have that are supposed to curb the issue are not working. In the Western Cape alone, various areas on the Cape Flats, where the bulk of gun-related incidents occur, have no official, cohesive plan to tackle the issue,” remarked Else.
VOC News has contacted Gun Free SA for a response, but there has been no reply regarding the issue.
