President Cyril Ramaphosa has yet to appoint a replacement for the National Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Shamilla Batohi, whose term expires in four months.
Mpumelelo Zikalala, Founder and Director of Zikalala Attorneys, told VOC News that not only the presidency but also the Department of Constitutional Development should be involved in the process of selecting a new head for the NDPP.
Furthermore, Zikalala emphasized that because the NPA’s office reports directly to the ministers and the president, they should be able to provide us, as members of the public, with assurances that matters are handled appropriately.
“There has been no indication that this is the reason for the delay in starting the recruitment process. This is how the process is going to be, just to ensure that if there’s any extension or any individuals that need to be roped in, this is the process that you’re following, and you can rest assured that in South Africa, this is going to be a transparent one, and we are simply going to take individuals purely on their merits and their ability to do the job that will set them to do as the national director of public prosecutions,” said Zikalala.
