South African Human Rights Group Takes Government to Court Over US Arms Export Permits

A South African human rights organisation has initiated legal proceedings against the government, seeking to halt the issuance of arms export permits to the United States. The group argues in court documents that the transfers may conflict with local laws and could pose risks to international peace and security.

The Southern Africa Litigation Centre (SALC) announced in a statement on Tuesday that it had submitted an application to the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria seeking to suspend or set aside arms export permits issued by South Africa’s National Conventional Arms Control Committee (NCACC).

Dr Atilla Kisla, International Justice Cluster Lead at the Southern Africa Litigation Centre, spoke to VOC News about the matter.
