The Global Sumud Flotilla, which includes activists such as Greta Thunberg and Mandla Mandela, is sailing nearly 40 boats from over 44 countries in an effort to end the siege and break Israel’s blockade of Gaza.
Dr. Fatima Hendricks, an occupational therapist, author, educator, and cancer survivor, told VOC News that they are currently in Tunisia waiting to sail, but were supposed to leave today. The Barcelona boats encountered bad weather, and the fleet had to coordinate the current situation so that they could depart on Sunday.
“The global Sumud flotilla’s goal is to break the siege and open a sustainable humanitarian sea corridor to Gaza’s shores. The movement began in 2006. There have been over 37 flotillas; some have made it to Gaza’s shores, and ten activists have been killed on the Mavi Marmara. We are aware of the risks, and we understand this is a long-term movement, and we sincerely ask for South Africans’ support in mobilising around the global flotilla,” said Hendricks.
