The Presidency has stated that South Africa has called on fellow G20 members to publicly express their views in rejecting the United States’ position questioning South Africa’s participation in the G20.
Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said South Africa does not require invitations to attend G20 meetings and remains a full and legitimate member of the bloc.
Magwenya said the country is actively engaging other G20 nations to uphold the forum’s consensus-based decision-making processes while continuing to advance key priorities that emerged from the Johannesburg Summit.
“We are engaging other G20 members to ensure that consensus-based processes are respected,” he said, adding that South Africa remains committed to championing the issues discussed and agreed upon at the summit.
Magwenya also confirmed that South Africa is in communication with G7 countries, some of which are also members of the G20, to ensure continuity on critical global issues.
“We are also in discussion with G7 members to ensure there is a continuity bridge of the issues that were surfaced and dealt with at the Johannesburg Summit into the G7 agenda. And some of those G7 member countries are also G20 member countries,” he said.
The Presidency maintains that South Africa will continue engaging multilaterally to protect its standing within global governance structures and to advance shared economic and development priorities.
