Motorists travelling through Elsies River have been urged to remain alert following the launch of a smash-and-grab awareness campaign amid concerns that ongoing roadworks are increasing the risk of crime.
The campaign was launched by Inspire Network, alongside community safety organisations and local business partners, after reports that prolonged construction projects have left motorists exposed in congested areas. Community leaders say criminals are exploiting traffic disruptions where vehicles are forced to slow down or stop.
The initiative aims to highlight high-risk zones and encourage motorists to take basic precautions, including keeping doors locked, windows closed and valuables out of sight.
Inspire Network CEO Imraahn Mukaddam said driver behaviour remains a major concern.
“We continue to see motorists distracted on their cellphones while driving through these vulnerable areas. That makes them easy targets. Awareness and vigilance are key to reducing these incidents,” he said.
Concerns were also raised about the pace and management of roadworks in the area, with community representatives calling for stronger safety measures at construction sites.
Organisers say smash-and-grab crimes have wider consequences for communities, as stolen goods are often linked to organised crime.
The awareness campaign is expected to continue into early 2026, focusing on public education and community engagement.
