Six suspects, aged between 22 and 31, are expected to appear in the Blue Downs Magistrates’ Court on Friday following their arrest on Thursday for possession of unlicensed firearms, ammunition, and drugs in the Mfuleni and Delft areas.
SAPS spokesperson F.C. Van Wyk confirmed that members of the Anti-Economic Crime Task Team and the Provincial Counterfeit and Illicit Goods Policing Team, in collaboration with Crime Intelligence, executed the operation after receiving information about a syndicate allegedly extorting money and terrorizing local communities in the two areas.
Van Wyk added that five of the suspects are also wanted in connection with a double murder case registered at the Stellenbosch SAPS.
“The confiscated firearms and ammunition include an AK-47 with 28 rounds, one R1 rifle round, a 9mm Makarov pistol with 61 rounds, a Beretta Z88 pistol with 15 rounds, a Norinco Star pistol with five rounds, a 9mm pistol with 23 rounds, and 400 mandrax tablets.”
“All firearms will be sent for ballistics analysis,” he confirmed.
