Following the Special Investigating Unit’s (SIU) findings into Tembisa Hospital, which uncovered coordinated syndicates responsible for looting over two billion rand, and the alleged involvement of Hangwani Morgan Maumela in the R1 billion catering tender at Northwest Hospital, Advocate Stephanie Fick, Executive Director of OUTA’s Accountability Division, spoke to VOC News about the report’s alarming revelations.
“If you look at, for example, the entire Tembisa scandal, it’s frightening to see what kind of shenanigans went unnoticed, and you wonder how many people were involved. The SIU investigation makes it clear that individuals within the department were involved in siphoning off an enormous amount of money from hospitals—around 2.1 to 2.3 billion rand,” Fick said.
She added: “A hospital like Tembisa, with a budget of about 1.6 to 1.9 billion rand, could be run entirely on the amount that was siphoned off from the department.”
