The National Sea Rescue Institute responded to multiple near-drowning incidents in Kleinmond and Rooi Els over the weekend.
Two girls, aged 10 and 11, one from De Doorns and the other from Touws River, were treated for non-fatal drowning symptoms at the Kleinmond Lagoon. They had been walking through shallow water with their grandmother when one child slipped into a deep hole. The second girl tried to help, and both had to be rescued.
In Rooi Els, a father and his son also needed medical care after strong rip currents pulled them into difficulty.
NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon explained that the father had been bodyboarding when he was swept out to sea.
“His son went into the water to assist but also got into difficulties. They managed to get to the beach safely, but both were hypothermic and suffering non-fatal drowning symptoms,” he said.
Both were stabilised and taken to hospital — the child in a stable condition, and his father stable but serious.
