The search for an end to the Ukraine–Russia war continues on Tuesday, with the United States, Ukraine and Russia convening in Geneva, Switzerland, for a third round of trilateral peace discussions.
Earlier this month, Ukraine and Russia agreed to the release of 157 prisoners of war from both sides during the second round of negotiations.
According to Russian state media outlet TASS, the Russian delegation has been instructed to “act within the framework of Anchorage” — a reference to a previous meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, in January this year.
The Russian Federation has maintained that any peace agreement would require Kyiv to relinquish its two easternmost regions — Luhansk and Donetsk.
For Ukraine, these demands remain unacceptable. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has maintained that the transfer of Ukrainian territory to Russia would fall outside his constitutional authority, as any territorial concessions would contradict the Ukrainian constitution.
Speaking on Sunday at the Munich Security Conference, Zelensky expressed hope that the trilateral talks would yield progress but lamented what he described as a lack of unified focus among the negotiating parties.
According to the Ukrainian president, the notion that the war would end simply through territorial concessions is an “illusion.” He reiterated that lasting peace would require clear security guarantees from Russia.
“Ukraine keeps returning to one simple point — peace can only be built on clear security guarantees. Where there is no clear security system, war always returns,” the Ukrainian leader stated.
