Police have intensified their festive season crime crackdown, resulting in the arrest of nearly 21,000 suspects across South Africa in just one week.
According to police spokesperson Vincent Mukhathi, SAPS arrested 20,274 suspects nationwide between 15 and 21 December as part of enhanced operations aimed at curbing crime during the holiday period.
The arrests include:
-2,000 suspects for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
-1,000 suspects for involvement in the illegal liquor trade
-158 suspects for murder
Mukhathi said police also made significant seizures during the operations, confiscating 49,000 litres of alcohol and 156 firearms.
“The South African Police Service has intensified its fight against crime during the festive season, resulting in the arrest of 20,274 suspects across the country between 15 and 21 December, and the seizure of contraband goods valued at R121 million,” Mukhathi said.
Police stated that the nationwide operations will continue throughout the festive season to ensure public safety and to deter criminal activity.
