The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) has announced a major initiative aimed at professionalising the taxi industry and eliminating criminal elements within the sector.
Stricter safety regulations, improved driver education, cashless payment methods, and operator formalisation will be given top priority in the strategy. Santaco said these actions are essential to reviving public trust in the sector, which carries millions of South Africans every day.
Santaco president, Abnar Tsebe, stressed that the organisation will work closely with government, law enforcement agencies, and local communities to ensutaxi industryre that discipline is maintained and commuters are protected.
“This initiative is about restoring dignity in the taxi industry. We want commuters to feel safe, and we want to show that our sector can operate with the highest level of professionalism,” Tsebe explained.
The move comes amid ongoing concerns about violence, reckless driving, and disputes within the industry.
