The City of Cape Town is urging residents to plan ahead as several key roads in the CBD will be closed for the annual Festive Lights Switch-On taking place this Sunday, 30 November 2025.
The event, scheduled from 4pm to 10pm at the Grand Parade, is expected to draw large crowds. To accommodate staging, safety measures and pedestrian movement, multiple streets in and around the city centre will be temporarily closed from 5am on Sunday until 5am on Monday.
According to the City, the following areas will be most affected:
- Adderley Street
- Darling Street
- Longmarket Street
- Plein/Lower Plein Street
- Parade Street
- Corporation Street
- Parliament Street
- Buitenkant/Castle Street section
Motorists are advised to use alternative routes and expect delays throughout the day, as the closures are part of the City’s safety and traffic management plan for the high-attendance event.
While the central Festive Lights Switch-On remains the flagship event, the City has also confirmed that community switch-on events will take place in other parts of Cape Town.
- Langa will host its event on 2 December,
- Mitchells Plain will follow on 5 December.
Residents attending any of the festivities are encouraged to make use of public transport where possible and to stay updated on route changes or service adjustments.
