The Department of Correctional Services has confirmed that they have transferred remand detainee Vusimusi Matlala from Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre to eBongweni Correctional Facility in KwaZulu-Natal, with the move taking place on 21 December 2025.
Spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo explained that the transfer is part of standard operational procedures across the country’s correctional facilities.
“The transfer of remand detainees and sentenced offenders is guided by security, safety, operational requirements, and effective inmate management,” Nxumalo explained.
He noted that Section 6 of the Correctional Services Act allows the National Commissioner to detain any offender at a correctional centre, regardless of the wording of a warrant.
“This provision enables the Department to respond appropriately to security assessments and operational demands,” Nxumalo added.
The department emphasised that the safety and security of detainees, staff, and the broader correctional environment remain a top priority. Nxumalo highlighted that transfers do not affect detainees’ legal rights or access to services.
“All detainees continue to receive appropriate care, and necessary arrangements are made to ensure that court appearances and legal processes are honoured without impediment,” he highlighted.
Given the sensitive nature of security-related decisions, Nxumalo noted that the department will not provide further public commentary on the specific security considerations behind the transfer.
