Commuters along the Mitchells Plain corridor will once again have access to passenger rail services, as PRASA Western Cape officially reopens the Kapteinsklip line on Monday, 23 February, bringing an end to a six-year disruption caused by vandalism and infrastructure damage.
The reinstated service will initially operate between four stations: Philippi, Lentegeur, Mitchells Plain, and Kapteinsklip. A shuttle service will run between Kapteinsklip and Philippi, with passengers transferring at Philippi in both directions.
PRASA spokesperson Zino Mihi said the reopening marks a significant milestone in restoring the Central Line, a vital public transport route in the region.
“This is the final phase in the full restoration of the Central Line. We have carried out extensive track and railway repairs, tested the signalling system, reinstated overhead electrical equipment, upgraded stations, and completed operational safety validations to ensure the line is ready for daily commuter use,” Mihi said.
She added that the reopening is expected to ease pressure on other parts of the public transport network, where congestion has become a daily challenge.
The Philippi-to-Kapteinsklip section has been out of service since 2020. Test trains conducted in December 2025 confirmed the line’s operational readiness ahead of its reopening.
