Recently, nearly 5,000 ANC councillors from across the country gathered at FNB Stadium in Nasrec for a Roll Call event. The event was led by party president Cyril Ramaphosa, with Secretary General Fikile Mbalula also addressing the audience. The National Executive Committee (NEC) presented an action plan aimed at reviving the ANC-run municipalities.
Speaking to VOC News, Hlumelo Xaba, a public governance researcher and political analyst, commented on how all political parties are starting to prepare for the upcoming 2026 local government elections.
“The DA has introduced its council in the City of Tshwane, and one would expect the ANC, which currently controls the Matjhabeng municipality, to organise itself effectively for the next elections. However, I believe that the main reason behind the ANC holding such an event is the growing pressure they are under. Keep in mind that the ANC is currently at 40% nationally and does not control most of the municipalities in various provinces,” said Xaba.
