Parly to seek legal advice in Phiyega’s challenge

The Chairperson of Parliament’s Police Portfolio Committee, Francois Beukma, says they will seek legal advice this week following suspended National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega’s decision to challenge the findings of the Claasen report.

According to the report, Phiyega is unfit to hold office. She was suspended in 2015.

The move followed her actions during the Marikana tragedy in 2012 in which 34 mineworkers were killed during a protracted strike at Lomin mine.

The committee received the report on Thursday.

Beukman has stressed that the matter should be concluded urgently.
