Parliament’s ad hoc committee investigating allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi was forced to adjourn on Tuesday after heated arguments erupted among members of Parliament.
The proceedings broke down over a dispute regarding whether Mkhwanazi’s submitted statement was an original document or a copy of his earlier testimony to the Madlanga Commission.
Committee chairperson, Soviet Lekganyane, halted the meeting to clarify the legal status of the document.
“Can we please adjourn without deliberating further on these matters and get to a point where the witness is called to own the statement or not, please? Look, our business is to allow the witness to make a presentation before us, which South Africans want to hear,” Lekganyane said.
The committee is expected to resume once the issue regarding the statement’s authenticity is resolved.
