The City of Cape Town has issued a warning to parents as hot summer weather increases the spread of germs, leading to higher cases of diarrhoea and dehydration among children, particularly during November and May.
Dehydration, a common complication of diarrhoeal disease, can be especially dangerous for babies and young children.
Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Francine Higham, said healthcare workers are on high alert, with staff ready to provide emergency treatment when necessary.
“We ask parents to stay alert, know the signs of dehydration, and take simple steps to protect their children. Prevention remains the simplest way to protect your children, and that starts with clean water, regular hand-washing, and proper food handling,” Higham advised.
The City encourages parents to monitor their children closely during the summer months and to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms of dehydration arise.
