Pandemonium has erupted in Tapalpa, Jalisco, Mexico, following the capture of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” leader of the Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG).
Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, or “El Mencho,” has been described by the United States Department of State as “one of the most wanted fugitives in Mexico.” The drug lord has been indicted multiple times in US courts, and the US State Department has offered a $15 million reward for information leading to his arrest.
On Sunday, Mexico’s Secretariat of National Defence (SEDENA) said the arrest was carried out by multiple branches of Mexican security forces, including the National Intelligence Center and special forces of the Mexican Army. The department added that the operation was conducted with assistance from the United States.
According to SEDENA, military personnel came under attack during the operation, leading to an exchange of gunfire that ultimately resulted in Mencho’s death.
Initially, the defence force reported that operations in Jalisco state were proceeding as normal, with no road closures recorded.
However, this was later contradicted by statements from two prominent malls in Jalisco, Andares and Galerías Santa Anita, which urged the public to remain at home.
SEDENA has since confirmed that four highway blockades remain active on roads in Jalisco, down from an initial 21 reported earlier.
