“Everything is gone — our home, our belongings, even my daughter’s school supplies,” said Naboewiya Parker, her voice trembling as she recounted the devastating fire that tore through Leiden Delft, on Saturday morning.
The early-morning blaze destroyed two formal homes and four wood-and-iron structures, leaving 26 people including children without shelter.
Parker told VOC News that her daughter had just started high school last week, and everything she had, from her uniform to her books, was reduced to ashes.
“Our house caught fire just before 6 o’clock,” Parker said.
“Three homes were affected in total. We’ve lost everything. Clothes, food, school supplies… it’s hard to even explain. We appeal to anyone in the community to help. Anything, big or small will make a difference. Shukran in advance.
City Fire and Rescue Services confirmed crews from Belhar and Lansdowne were on the scene, extinguishing the fire by 7:50 AM. One adult female suffered smoke inhalation but is stable.
Spokesperson Jermaine Carelse said:
“Two formal dwellings and four wood-and-iron structures were destroyed. Our teams responded quickly, but the impact on these families is significant.”
Parker’s plea paints a stark picture of lives upended overnight.
“This fire didn’t just take our house,” she said. “It took our sense of security, our memories, our sense of home. We are asking anyone who can to help us rebuild, even with small donations. Every little bit counts.”
