The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has urged holidaymakers to be cautious during the full moon spring tide, which peaks on Thursday, 2 April 2026, warning that it could affect tidal conditions over the Easter weekend.
“Spring tides bring higher high tides and lower low tides, which increases the tidal range and intensifies currents,” NSRI spokesperson Andrew Ingram said.
“Swimmers, rock anglers, and coastal hikers need to be extra vigilant during this period.”
The phenomenon, which occurs when the sun, moon, and Earth align, can create stronger rip currents, higher waves, and hazardous conditions along the coast. Hiking trails near the shoreline may become dangerous during high tide, while shoreline anglers are advised to maintain a safe distance from the water.
Ingram said swimmers should stick to lifeguard-protected beaches, wear life jackets when fishing or boating, and check tide timetables and weather forecasts before heading out.
“Alcohol should be avoided near water, and children must always be supervised. Boaters and paddlers should use the NSRI SafeTRX app to log trips and call for help, if necessary,” he added.
The NSRI said the effects of spring tides could last several days and encouraged the public to take precautions to enjoy coastal activities safely while respecting the ocean’s power.
