The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) is warning the public to be cautious around water bodies as Cape Town and parts of the Western Cape experience a severe heatwave, with temperatures expected to reach up to 40°C.
Speaking to VOC News, NSRI communications manager Andrew Ingram highlighted the dangers of increased water activity during hot weather.
“During hot weather we often see increased activity at beaches, rivers and dams. A few simple precautions can make the difference between having fun and a tragedy,” Ingram said.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a heatwave advisory for the Western Cape, effective from Monday, 9 March to Friday, 13 March. NSRI urges residents to swim only at beaches where lifeguards are on duty and between red and yellow flags, while always supervising children closely.
Ingram also stressed the importance of hydration and avoiding alcohol while engaging in water activities.
“Dehydration and alcohol can impair judgement and increase the risk of accidents. Always drink plenty of water and never swim alone or under the influence,” he said.
The NSRI further reminded the public to be aware of rip currents, slippery banks, and sudden drop-offs in rivers and dams. In case of an emergency, they should contact rescue services immediately and use floating aids when assisting others.
