Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana says the process to appoint a new commissioner for the South African Revenue Service (SARS) has been finalised and now awaits a formal announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
This follows the end of Edward Kieswetter’s seven-year term at the helm of the revenue service.
Godongwana confirmed that the decision has already been made, with the successful candidate expected to assume the role on 1 May.
“The president has made the decision. Whoever is appointed, the only benefit I have is that I have on my desk a presidential note which tells me who’s going to take the job from the 1st of May. It’s not me. What is left now is for the president to make an announcement,” he said.
The finance minister also praised Kieswetter’s leadership, crediting him with restoring SARS following the impact of state capture.
“SARS has not only turned the corner, but it’s also become one of the most efficient and tech-intensive institutions in our government. When Edward arrived, the institution was at its lowest performance, having been severely compromised through state capture. They’ve done tremendously well, and I’m happy with that achievement,” Godongwana said.
The appointment of a new commissioner is expected to mark the next phase in maintaining and strengthening the institution’s performance.
