The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has announced a recall affecting hundreds of Jeep vehicles in South Africa due to safety-related defects identified by Stellantis South Africa.
The recall affects 354 Jeep Grand Cherokee WL Series vehicles sold during 2023, as well as 115 Jeep Wrangler vehicles sold nationally between 2022 and 2024.
According to the NCC, the affected Jeep Grand Cherokee models may experience erratic illumination of the driver seat belt warning indicator linked to the airbag controller system.
“The warning indicator or system may fail to adequately alert the driver when the seat belt is unbuckled, potentially reducing occupant protection in the event of a crash,” NCC spokesperson Phetho Ntaba said.
The Commission also warned that the affected Jeep Wrangler vehicles could experience a blank instrument panel cluster while being driven.
“This may result in important driving information, such as the speedometer or warning lights, not being displayed to the driver, potentially increasing safety risks while operating the vehicle,” Ntaba said.
The affected vehicles were distributed nationally.
Consumers who own the recalled vehicles have been urged to take them to authorised Jeep dealerships for inspection and software updates at no cost.
“Consumers who own the affected vehicles are urged to present their vehicles at an authorised Jeep dealership for inspection and the necessary software update,” Ntaba said.
