The community of Mitchells Plain has been left in shock following the fatal shooting of Moulana Mustaqeem Wanza. He was gunned down close to the Salaamudien Masjid shortly after taraweeh prayers last night.
The mosque committee has extended its heartfelt condolences to Moulana Mustaqeem’s family and friends. They have also urged members of the public to refrain from speculation while authorities continue their investigation.
The Chairperson of the Imaamat Council of Mitchells Plain, Moulana Sabrie Davids, likewise conveyed his condolences. He described the incident as a tragic loss and warned that ongoing crime continues to have a devastating impact on local communities.
Meanwhile, the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC-SA) President, Sheikh Riad Fataar, expressed profound grief over the incident. “The Muslim Judicial Council, the Muslim community, and the wider community are shocked and saddened by the fatal shooting of Moulana Mustaqeem Wanza and the injury of Moulana Junaid Sauls. This heinous act occurred after the Taraweeh Salat, as they were returning home from the masjid. There is no respect shown for the sacred month of Ramadan. We condemn this violence in the strongest terms. The Holy Quran says, ‘Do not take a life which Allah has made sacred except by due right’ (Surah Al-An’am, 6:151). Taking a life is a grave sin in Islam.”
Furthermore, according to SAPS spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala, Lentegeur police responded to reports of a shooting on Candy Tuff Street. They found the body of the Moulana lying in the street. Reports indicate he was leaving the mosque around 22:55 when unknown men opened fire. The motive remains under investigation.
