In response to recent reports of three smash-and-grab incidents along the N1 near Jakes Gerwel Drive, Councillor Emre Uygun advised motorists to exercise increased caution when travelling on this route.
Uygun explained that although there are currently no confirmed attacks, an incident occurred on Jakes Gerwel Drive near the footbridge between Langa and Bonteheuwel. In this case, three smash-and-grab suspects fled into a nearby informal settlement when Traffic Services, Metro Police, and the South African Police Service (SAPS) responded.
“All motorists should remain alert, especially near off-ramps, footbridges, and slow-moving traffic. Keep a safe following distance to avoid being boxed in, ensure your doors are locked, keep valuables out of sight, and avoid stopping unnecessarily in high-risk areas,” he added.
In case of an emergency, he advised motorists to contact the City of Cape Town emergency call centre on 021 480 7700 and to download the City’s mobile application, which allows residents to log emergency incidents directly with the public emergency communication centre without having to speak to a call taker.
