For many young people, the communities they grow up in are often defined by negative headlines. But Mitchell’s Plain entrepreneur Eubranesia Santi is determined to challenge those perceptions, saying her journey proves that resilience, faith and determination can create opportunities despite difficult circumstances.
After starting out by developing natural hair care products from home, Santi has built a successful entrepreneurial journey while using her platform to encourage young people, particularly girls to embrace who they are and believe in their potential.
Speaking to VOC News, Santi said growing up in Mitchell’s Plain came with its share of challenges, but she believes the area is also filled with hardworking families and young people whose stories deserve to be celebrated.
“People often hear Mitchell’s Plain and think of crime, but I think of hardworking parents, strong families and young people with so much potential. Mitchell’s Plain has so much to offer, and good can come from our community,” she said.
Santi said her entrepreneurial journey was inspired by her own experience of being bullied at school because of her natural hair texture.
“For a long time I felt like I didn’t fit in because of my hair texture. When I finally embraced who I was, I realised there were many other young girls facing the same struggle. I wanted to change that narrative and remind them that they are enough just as they are,” she said.
She credits her family and community for helping her persevere through difficult times and says they remain her biggest source of motivation.
“Whenever I feel like giving up, I think about that young girl who is still struggling with her confidence. Remembering why I started keeps me going. If my journey can inspire even one person to believe in themselves and keep pushing forward, then it has all been worth it,” Santi said.
She hopes her story serves as a reminder that where a person comes from should never determine what they are capable of achieving.
