The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry has shifted its focus to communications involving suspended Crime Intelligence head Major-General Feroz Khan, with the name of EFF leader Julius Malema emerging during this week’s proceedings.
Investigators presented WhatsApp messages exchanged between Khan and tobacco executive Mohamed Sayed after forensic data extracted from Khan’s cellphone, covering the period between 2020 and 2023, was submitted as evidence before the commission. The communications form part of the commission’s ongoing probe into allegations surrounding Crime Intelligence operations and relationships with external individuals.
The latest revelations have sparked renewed public interest in the commission’s work and raised questions about the nature of the communications, their relevance to the inquiry, and what implications they may have for those mentioned.
To unpack the significance of the evidence presented and its potential impact on the commission’s investigation, independent crime and policing analyst, Dr Esewu Mxolisi Mathebula, engaged with VOC News on this issue.
