Iran’s Foreign Ministry says it will agree to end the war only if conditions align with its ten-point peace plan, submitted to the United States through Pakistani intermediaries. The development comes amid a fragile two-week ceasefire, during which Tehran has agreed to coordinate safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil routes.
Political analyst and Professor of African Politics and International Relations at the University of Pretoria, Christopher Isike, has raised concerns about escalating tensions, particularly following threats by US President Donald Trump. He warns that such rhetoric risks worsening the conflict and may violate international law.
Reflecting on the situation, Isike argues that Trump may have miscalculated the complexity of the conflict. “He allowed himself to be used and didn’t realise how deeply he was involved,” Isike said, suggesting the US underestimated Iran’s capacity to respond. He added that expectations of a swift and easy outcome were misguided, noting that “this was not going to be a walk in the park.”
Isike also pointed to growing domestic pressure within the United States, where some groups are increasingly questioning the alignment of US and Israeli interests. “More and more Americans are growing frustrated with the perceived conflict between American and Israeli interests,” he said.
According to Isike, these pressures, combined with Iran’s strategic positioning, may have prompted the US to engage with elements of Tehran’s proposal. He described the situation as a complex and evolving geopolitical moment, adding, “It certainly is interesting to watch these developments unfold.”
