The National Investigation Task Team (NITT) has confirmed that the 2025 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination breach was limited to 40 learners across eight schools in Pretoria.
“The breach involved a Department of Basic Education official whose child received and shared examination materials,” said NITT chairperson Professor Chika Sehoole.
“It was circulated via USB drives, printed copies, WhatsApp, and screenshots. There is no evidence that it spread further.”
Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube welcomed the findings.
“The 2025 NSC remains credible. Where wrongdoing is proven, it will be addressed, but the achievements of the vast majority of learners are protected,” said Gwarube.
The NITT confirmed that seven examination papers were leaked, including English Home Language, Mathematics, and Physical Sciences. The investigation included forensic analysis, investigative marking, and interviews with learners, invigilators, and officials.
The results of the 40 implicated candidates will be withheld while disciplinary and verification processes are concluded.
“This interim report assures the public that accountability is being pursued without compromising the integrity of the NSC,” Sehoole said.
