Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber has unveiled the new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system, which uses artificial intelligence to combat corruption. Speaking at the Sun City Tourism Leadership Conference, he explained that the digital platform will automate visa applications, passport verification, and selfie-to-passport matching. Initially, the system will apply to tourist visas of less than 90 days, aiming to improve efficiency, border security and promote tourism and investment.
“The system notifies you that you have a 90-day visa, which expires tomorrow. If you leave the country or need to apply for renewals, you will be able to extend your visa from 90 to 180 days through the same system. Let’s say you’ve reached day 180 and need to leave. We’ll know in real time who hasn’t left because your face wasn’t scanned on the way out,” he said.
