A solidarity hike for Palestine is scheduled for Saturday, 6 September, at Newlands Forest in Cape Town, starting at 8:30 am. The initiative is organised by Youth for Al-Quds South Africa in collaboration with Hikers for Humanity, combining wellness with activism.
Speaking to VOC News, Youth for Al-Quds (SA) National Coordinator Abubakir Rinquest explained the motivation behind the event.
“We, as Youth for Al-Quds and Hikers for Humanity, planned a hike for Palestine this Saturday, Insha Allah (If God wills). The idea was born out of the difficult circumstances Palestinians were facing at the time, including clampdowns on displaying the Palestinian flag,” he said.
Rinquest added that the hike is closely linked to their broader “Fly the Flag” initiative.
“We decided a hike would be perfect because it combines wellness with activism, allowing us to stay active while raising awareness,” he said.
Participants are asked to meet at the Newlands Forest helipad, with organisers encouraging early arrival to ensure a prompt start.
Alongside the hike, Youth for Al-Quds and Hikers for Humanity are intensifying their “Cover the Logo” campaign, which encourages a boycott of brands such as Cape Union Mart and K-Way due to their alleged links to Israel.
“For those who already own these brands, we suggest using them positively; by stitching over logos or placing stickers on them to raise awareness,” Rinquest explained.
The event is expected to attract a strong turnout from Cape Town’s hiking and activist communities.
