The High Court in Johannesburg has issued an interdict against Operation Dudula, preventing the organisation and its members from demanding IDs from private individuals at health facilities or intimidating, harassing, or assaulting foreign nationals.
The order was delivered on Monday following an application brought by Kopanang Africa Against Xenophobia, the South African Informal Traders Forum, the Inner City Federation, and the Abahlali baseMjondolo Movement SA.
Under the court order, only immigration officials and police members may lawfully request identification. Members of
Operation Dudula is also prohibited from making hate speech, interfering with access to healthcare, schools, or businesses, and unlawfully evicting or removing foreign nationals from homes, trading stalls, or workplaces.
The ruling further forbids the organisation from encouraging others, whether in person or on social media, to commit any of the prohibited acts.
The court has instructed Operation Dudula to communicate the judgment to all its office-bearers and members, ensuring compliance with the order.
