The Heart and Stroke Foundation SA (HSFSA) has announced their February campaign aimed at educating and mobilising citizens to care for their hearts.
The fundraising initiative is aimed at assisting the organisation that aims to tackle heart disease, strokes, and major associated risk factors, which include diabetes and hypertension.
The Heart and Stroke Foundation SA, as a non-profit organisation, is reliant upon donor funding and partnerships to continue operating their initiatives.
Speaking to VOC News, Heart and Stroke Foundation SA CEO Professor Pamela Naidoo explains that the NPO identified February as a month to highlight heart issues.
“We thought that because February is the month of love, as a way to maybe highlight heart disease and strokes, which are quite a burden in our country even among the younger generation. So this was the perfect time to raise awareness,” explains Professor Naidoo.
The HSFSA has stated that initiatives will be held across the country, with Professor Naidoo furthering that the organisation will be mobilised at community centres, shopping malls, and schools, with a particular focus on foundation phase education as the information learnt is transmitted to those within their households.
“We use the life-course approach. So, we go into schools where there are young children through to high school, but at the moment we are focusing a lot more on the young children because we believe education at the foundation stage is very important. The exciting thing is that they go home and tell their parents and grandparents what they learnt. So we believe that the education is carried through the education,” stated Professor Naidoo.
