Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube has used the 2025 Top Achievers’ Awards to highlight the critical role teachers play in driving academic excellence across the country.
Speaking at the ceremony, Gwarube said strong academic results are built in classrooms long before learners enter an examination venue.
“Teachers are the quiet architects of excellence. They see potential before it becomes visible, and they refuse to give up on a child, even when that child has given up on themselves,” said Gwarube.
She noted that educators continue to deliver quality education despite pressure on the schooling system and limited resources.
“In a system that is often under strain, teachers keep showing up with commitment, creativity and courage, and the results we celebrate today reflect that professionalism,” she added.
The minister also acknowledged the discipline and dedication demonstrated by the Class of 2025, saying their achievements were shaped by the guidance and support they received at school.
“Without excellent teachers, we cannot have excellent learners,” said Gwarube.
The event recognised top-performing matriculants from across the country, while also honouring teachers for their contribution to learner success.
Gwarube emphasised that sustained support for educators remains key to improving outcomes in basic education.
