The Grassy Park community is set to engage the City of Cape Town on the planned expansion of the Klip Road Cemetery. Residents are encouraged to attend the public meeting on Thursday, 11 December 2025, at Isaac Jacobs Hall from 6pm to 7:30pm. Ward 65 Councillor Donovan Nelson will outline the project, respond to questions, and explain how the expansion may affect surrounding areas, including Lotus River, Parkwood, Ottery, Lavender Hill, Steenberg, and Retreat.
Councillor Nelson said the cemetery has been under pressure for several years, prompting the city to explore further development. “It has been expanding. It is currently a major concern in terms of capacity, and so the City of Cape Town has decided to pursue the possibility of expanding further, this time a bit closer to Klip Road. This includes taking in the parking area on the western side of the cemetery and also the space at the back where the old entrance was. This is just to give way to an additional 3,000 graves as well,” he explained.
Nelson added that the Klip Road Cemetery serves a wide region and reaches full capacity quickly. “The Klip Road Cemetery is obviously servicing a lot of areas, not just the Grassy Park, Parkwood, and Lotus River area. So, it does fill up very quickly. This is one of the questions I put to officials: to please give us a timeline of when they foresee that particular space being filled up again, because it seems as if every three years we are doing an upgrade,” he said.
