Acting Minister of Police, Professor Firoz Cachalia, and Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Andries Nel, have reaffirmed government’s commitment to enhancing court security through increased police visibility and the use of technology.
This comes in the wake of a deadly shooting outside the Athlone Magistrate’s Court last week, in which one man was killed, and two others were wounded. The incident has sparked fresh concern over safety at court precincts, particularly during the transport and appearance of suspects.
Police Ministry spokesperson Kamogelo Mogotsi said authorities are now considering expanding the use of video links for court appearances particularly for remand detainees to reduce the risks associated with transporting suspects.
“We are looking at technological solutions to improve safety in and around our courts. Using video link systems will not only reduce the need to transport suspects but can also help prevent coordinated attacks,” said Mogotsi.
The departments of Justice and Police are expected to hold further consultations on national strategies aimed at protecting judicial officers, court staff, and members of the public who attend proceedings.
Police spokesperson Andre Traut has confirmed that a 24-year-old has been arrested in connection with the Athlone court shooting.
“The suspect is currently under police guard in hospital, where he is receiving medical treatment after allegedly being shot and wounded by a rival gang member. Once formally charged, he is expected to appear in the very same court where the incident took place,” he added.
