Golden Arrow Driver Suspended After Fatal Pedestrian Crash in Cape Town

Golden Arrow Bus Service (GABS) has confirmed that one of its bus drivers has been suspended following a fatal accident at the corner of Plein and Strand streets on Thursday morning.

A woman, who has not yet been identified, was knocked down by a bus while crossing the road.

GABS spokesperson Bronwen Dyke-Beyer said the investigation is ongoing and that the company is fully cooperating with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

“Golden Arrow can confirm a tragic incident which occurred in Strand Street on Thursday morning involving one of our buses. At this stage, the exact details of the incident are unknown, but a female pedestrian was declared deceased at the scene. The investigation is ongoing, and we are fully cooperating with the South African Police Service in order to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. The bus driver has been suspended while investigations take place.”

Police spokesperson Ndakhe Gwala said the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.

“This office confirms that Cape Town Central police opened a case of culpable homicide following an accident that occurred at the corner of Plein and Strand streets in the Cape Town CBD at around 09:30 on Thursday, 16 July 2026. A woman, who has not yet been identified, was knocked down by a bus while crossing the road. She was declared deceased at the scene by medical personnel. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation,” said Gwala.
