Following continuous drone attacks on aid vessels bound for Gaza, Spain and Italy have deployed naval ships to escort the Global Sumud Flotilla. Activists in the Sumud flotilla claim that drones dropped flashbang explosives and jammed communications during the mission to break Israel’s naval blockade.
To provide insight into the flotilla’s journey, Dr Fatima Hendricks, occupational therapist, author, educator, and cancer survivor, spoke to VOC News and explained that they have been sailing for 11 days.
“Some of these Spanish ships have been travelling for over 20 days because we’ve got some sailboats, motorboats, we have to kind of calibrate and reach out for speed, and between that, we have to refill and restock. We are outside Crete in the territorial waters,” said Hendricks.
Expanding on the mission’s motivation, she said, “We take our lead from the Palestinian people, and that is the Sumud that we are inspired by. As Gaza City is being annihilated by the occupying powers, we have no option but to continue in these 38 flotilla attempts.”
