President Cyril Ramaphosa is calling for urgent, coordinated global action to tackle inequality, including the creation of a permanent, independent panel to monitor trends and guide policy responses. The proposal follows consultations with international experts as part of the G20 process to address what is increasingly being described as a global crisis.
Professor Imraan Valodia, who is part of the expert group, said the idea stems from a collective recommendation to treat inequality with the same urgency as climate change.
“As part of the G20 process, President Ramaphosa appointed a panel to prepare a report on global inequality. I was among the members, and our primary recommendation was that if the world is to address this emergency, we should set up an international panel on inequality,” he explained.
Valodia said the proposal draws inspiration from global climate structures. “We drew our inspiration from the international panel on climate change, which provides scientific and independent assessments. Our proposal was that a similar panel be set up to assess how the world is doing in terms of inequality.”
He added that inequality, like climate change, must be treated as a global emergency requiring evidence-based solutions. “That proposal was accepted, and we are now in the process of setting up the panel,” he said.
